Learn how to analyze and interpret gait.
Gait is more than an assessment. It's a model for understanding how your client loads, absorbs force, and produces force. Once you recognize each phase, your assessment and exercise selection get a lot more specific.

Why I built this around gait.
You can study biomechanics in a textbook. But when a client is moving in front of you in real time, that's a different skill.
Analyzing and interpreting movement takes more than memorizing anatomy. It takes a coach's eye. The kind that comes from practice, repetition, and a clear model for what to look for. Without that, the information you learned stays in the book. You watch your client move and don't know how to translate what you're seeing into a better program.
Gait is the model I use to build that eye. It's how I categorize assessment, exercise selection, and programming for almost every client I work with.
Each phase of gait has different biomechanical requirements. Heel strike is where you have the most range of motion available. Midstance is where you absorb force and create internal rotation. Toe off is where you produce force and create stiffness.
Once you can match what you see in assessment to a phase of gait, your exercise selection gets a lot more specific. Every exercise has a reason. Every progression has a why.
What you'll walk away with
Three skills you can put to work with your next client.
Understand the three phases of gait
Heel strike, midstance, toe off. Each phase has its own biomechanics. Heel strike opens up range of motion. Midstance absorbs force through internal rotation. Toe off produces force through stiffness. Once you understand what each phase requires, you can match assessment findings to it.
Assess gait the way I do
I'll walk you through my process. How I observe. What I'm looking for at each phase. How I use the same assessment measurements (squat depth, hip flexion, internal rotation, ankle flexion) to figure out which phase someone is stuck in. This is what I use with every client.
Match exercises to what you see
This is where gait becomes a programming tool. Once you've identified what phase someone has access to, you can pick exercises that meet them where they are and build the ranges of motion they're missing. Be a sniper with exercise selection instead of guessing.
What You'll Learn in 6 Weeks
WEEK 1
Foundational Principles Of Biomechanics
Understand what most don't know about biomechanics and how you can use these principles to guide movement.
WEEK 2
Neurological Influences on Movement
Uncover how the nervous system impacts movement and performance.
WEEK 3
Functional Anatomy Of The Upper Body
Develop an understanding of breathing, scapular and thoracic mechanics, and the relevant muscles and joints that are associated with assessment and exercise selection.
WEEK 4
Functional Anatomy Of The Lower Body
Dive deep into lower body mechanics such as the foot, ankle, hip and pelvis, and how they relate to movement, categorising exercises and assessment.
WEEK 5
Assessment
Learn how to assess to be able to pick the best exercise to maximize results.
WEEK 6
Program Design
Learn the art of designing purposeful exercise programs, tailoring them to optimise movement and performance.
Meet Your Instructor, Alex Effer
I created the 6-week Foundations of Biomechanics Course for trainers, therapists and movement specialists, who want to better understand or review the essentials of biomechanics and anatomy. This course will help you assess movement patterns, prescribe effective exercises, and identify limitations in the body. Elevate your understanding, amplify your skills, and revolutionize your approach to movement with the Foundations of Biomechanics Course.
Who Is This For?
Trainers, Therapists and Movement Specialists who want to:
- Improve their results with clients
- Differentiate themselves from the competition
- Develop a different perspective on the body and functional anatomy
- Use this course as a stepping stone for The EVOLVE Biomechanics Mentorship
While also having the flexibility to watch and review the material at their own pace.
